Bluebirds prefer to live in open park lands, pastures and meadows making Lapham Peak a favorite area for them to spend the summer. Bluebirds eat large quantities of insects. In fact 60-80% of their diet is insects. They like to perch on fence posts or small trees and swoop down to eat insects on the grassy ground. Bluebirds will enjoy eating berries or insects.

There are various styles of bluebird nest boxes.  In 2004, the Lapham Peak management experimented with a new style of box called the "K" box from its Kentucky origin. It is very small, and designed in such a way to discourage house sparrows and starlings from entering and nesting.  Some changes were made in the "K" box to make it easier to monitor and clean out. There are currently 35 nest boxes.  Last year 104 baby bluebirds were fledged.  Thanks to the volunteers who regularly monitor the boxes and record what they see.
